The traditional Haitian leaf bath transforms itself, in this painting, into a ritual of return.
Taking slow, intentional baths as a way of reconnecting with ancestral femininity and cultural traditions denied at birth, the artist mourns the missed cleansing leaf rituals and presence of her guiding matriarchy.
In this specific bath, she reclaims herself.
The bath becomes an initiation into a new self.
