Over the past 5 years, I have hosted a series of private dinner parties in the comfort of my home. From authentic Haitian food to soft playing troubadours, the famous Haitian cultural “ambiance” has always found its way at the table.
To me, Pilon is a sound, that almost introduces a ritual. Growing up Haitian, I knew that the rhythmic pounding of the pilon meant cooking was about to begin. To me it was a call to konbit (to gather, contribute, share, and be in community. Like the beat of a drum, its sound eventually brought people together). This event is an invitation to reconnect with that rhythm: with food, memory, culture, and one another.
